Quality of
Life
Carson City takes pride in the
fact that multiple generations of born-and-raised Nevadans call
the community home. What is it about the area that makes folks
want to stay? Is it the breathtaking scenery? The unparalleled
outdoor recreation? The rich history and charming historic
district? The reasonable cost of living? As a community, Carson
City works hard to enhance the quality of life for its residents.
Our goal is for our children to return to the area to raise
their own families.
The Area: Recreation
Centrally located,
Carson City is a mere thirty-minute drive to both Lake Tahoe and
Reno. A multitude of world-renowned ski resorts and golf courses
surround the community, while hiking and biking trails, rock
climbing, water skiing, river rafting, fishing and hunting are
just a few of the favorite pastimes residents enjoy.
The
growing arts community includes:
-
The Brewery Arts Center —
a multiple arts complex with
with galleries,
theater and concert venues
-
The Carson Symphony
-
The
Capital City Arts Initiative
-
The Nevada State Museum
— one of the finest small city
museums in the West
-
The Railroad Museum
— with working trains
The downtown business district
features an
abundance of beautiful architecture in its famous historic
district, including the state Capitol Complex along with a
number of quality bistros, restaurants and shops.
The Area: Mild Climate
The saying “if you don’t like
the weather, just wait 10 minutes,” may be said about many
communities—but it happens to be true for Carson City! One of
the best aspects of living in Northern Nevada is the abundance
of sunny, clear blue sky days—which typically number 266 per
year.
The high desert beauty of the
environment sharply contrasts with stunning forests and the
world-renowned grandeur of nearby Lake Tahoe. The semi-arid climate
averages 11 inches of rainfall per year. You can expect the
average high temperatures in July to be 89.5 F., while the low
averages 50.2 F. Winters are cool, with an occasional snowstorm.
The snow accumulates in the mountains, making for great skiing,
but typically melts in our valley within a few days. The average
high temperature in January is 46.5 F. and the average low is
20.7 F.
Reasonable Cost of Living
Enhancing the quality of life
in Carson City are the short commute times (most residents live
within 10 minutes of their workplace) and reasonable home
prices. In 2003, the median price of a new single-family home
was $252,900—significantly lower than home prices in neighboring
California. In Carson City, the “American Dream” of home
ownership is a reality for many of our residents.
History Central
Carson
City’s charming and well-maintained historic district attracts
thousands of visitors each year. The Kit Carson Trail is a
walking path through Carson City's historic residential homes
district. A painted blue line and bronze medallions along the
sidewalk mark the route, which features stops at landmarks,
including 1800s-era Victorian-style homes, museums and churches.
Featured attractions include the house where John Wayne’s last
movie “The Shootist” was filmed; the home of Orion Clemens, Mark
Twains brother; Hannah Clapp’s home, the town’s original
feminist; numerous “haunted” homes and much more.
