Carson City’s economic development efforts are focused on the benefits the community
offers to companies, individuals and families alike.
The community’s central location in Northern Nevada and its close proximity to states such as Utah, California and Oregon position Carson City as the ideal gateway to the western region. In addition to the favorable tax benefits, Carson City offers businesses and their employees a great quality of life, complete with abundant outdoor recreation, a thriving arts culture, charming bistros and cafés, minimal commute times and more.
Industry Strengths
In 2006, the Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA) hired AngelouEconomics (AE), a nationally recognized economic development consulting firm, to develop a regional economic development strategy. The initiative, termed the NorthernNVision strategy, focused on determining the unique assets of each county within the region, including Carson City.
The study confirmed that Carson City's unique strengths include:
- A state government presence that provides a stable employment environment
- Very proactive land use and comprehensive planning
- A combined city and county government that makes comprehensive planning more efficient
- The presence of a strong regional hospital
- Good arts and culture amenities for an area of its size
- Good educational assets with the home of Western Nevada College's main campus
- Close geographic proximity to Reno/Sparks metro, and Lake Tahoe
The study also highlighted Carson City's strong potential to be a regional retail hub; its excellent potential for downtown to become a central entertainment hub for families and young professionals; the city's potential for increased business growth in white collar, professional, above average wage paying industries; and tourism boost from the V&T Railroad project & new Freeway.
The study concluded that Carson City offers a variety of business opportunities and is especially attractive for the following industries:
- Light Advanced Manufacturing
- Business & Technology Services
- Tourism and Hospitality
- Regional Health Services
